What is Health Care?

In the past couple of years healthcare has become a hot topic. To be honest, I don't know much about the healthcare system except that it affects hospitals trips and doctors and stuff. So let me define it to start: healthcare is any service related to the health, both mental and physical, of a person. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) the goal of healthcare is to ensure the good health of the population as well as fair financial contributions from the population and government.
I was flipping through the textbook today and it really caught my attention when it was describing how culture can influence what we define as health and illness. And I feel that it is totally true! If you think about the Nacirema article, some of their rituals and beliefs about the body and illness totally contradicts our society's view of the body. And depending on a society's view of being healthy and being sick impacts the healthcare systems around the globe so my plan is try and find some information about other cultures healthcare systems.

Sociology and Health

Why did I decide to pick this topic?

Hey guys! My name is Kristina and I decided to pick "Health Care: General" because I feel that it will be beneficial to know about society's ways of dealing with injury and illnesses since we will most likely encounter it in our lifetimes. There are so many factors that stem from society that affect the global health care system. Sociologists who study medicine in society realize how illnesses are related to cultural beliefs, lifestyle, and social class. It'll be interesting to see how different classes are affected by one central health care like Obamacare and also to look at the global perspective on medical care.
